The REDD+ Secretariat of Costa Rica and FONAFIFO open the call to participate in the Costa Rican Emission Reduction Program (ERP).
Where does the ERP come from?
Since 2012, Costa Rica has been managing financial resources with the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), which works with developing countries that want to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, increase carbon stocks, and conserve and sustainably manage forests. Together with the FCPF, the Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement (ERPA) will be signed in the coming months, which will provide the country with an additional opportunity to bring in new resources to expand actions in the quest for a low-carbon economy, including the ERP.
What will the ERP do?
The ERP program will begin with the distribution of monetary benefits to forest landowners who sign a Contract for the Reduction of Forest Emissions (CREF) with FONAFIFO. With this mechanism, it is estimated that approximately 6,300 natural or legal persons and 535,000 hectares of land with primary forests, in regeneration or forest plantations, that have not received PES at least until December 31, 2017, will be benefited. The approximate amount is $52 per hectare distributed over the period from 2018 to 2024 (7 years), which corresponds to the duration of the program and CREF.
During the term of the ERPA with the FCPF, the country will carry out 3 monitoring events that coincide with the disbursements. A total of 3 payments will be made per year due, as follows:
Public and private owners, including indigenous territories, owners of farms (registered or unregistered) with forests, natural regeneration, forest management (primary or secondary) or forest plantations can participate in the CREF mechanism. Persons associated with NGOs, Private Reserves Network and other institutions or associations of a forestry nature may also participate by signing up to participate in the ERP program funds by participating in this call.
The beneficiaries will be selected among those interested landowners who send the application. Also considered will be those interested persons whose applications did not reach the necessary score to receive the economic compensations of the PPSA from FONAFIFO.

The Costa Rica: Gender Action Plan for the National REDD+ Strategy, is the first gender action plan developed by the country in the climate change area and sets out a clear path for continuing work on gender and the environment in Costa Rica. It proposes a range of activities for each of the EN-REDD+ Policies, Actions, and Measures (PAMs) that can generate significant rural development opportunities for a wide range of women, while reducing deforestation and forest degradation and increasing carbon stocks.
