UCC Carbon credits

Fonafifo, based on Forest Law 7575, its regulations and modifications, the Manual of Payment Procedures for Environmental Services (PES), and other binding regulations, develops projects for compensation of GHG emissions, based on tree plantations that are part of the PES program.

The Proposal Department, relying on internationally recognized methodologies, carries out all the necessary actions for the measurement of biomass and the calculation of carbon credits (UCC-Fonafifo) of the project. For more information contact: propuestas@fonafifo.go.cr

Each UCC-Fonafifo is a unit of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) that represents the emissions that are sequestered, to offset emissions derived from activities occurring elsewhere (1 credit = 1 tCO2e). The price of each unit is US$7.5

How to Acquire UCC-FONAFIFO´s Carbon Credits?

1. Buy online: https://www.fonafifo.go.cr/es/calculadora

We have an Agreement with the BNCR, a security certificate for the Fonafio domain, and transactions processed by Verified by Visa and Master Card Secure Code. A Purchase Certificate is issued online.

2. Buy through our staff:

Send an email to mercadeo@fonafifo.go.cr  or propuestas@fonafifo.go.cr  indicating the number of units you need to purchase, your identification number or the legal identification number of your organization, and the year of the GHG inventory when applies. By return mail you will receive a quote and information on the steps to complete the purchase and certificate delivery process.

3. Buy through SINPE mobile:

 Wallet number in colones (506) 84040364. The exchange rate must be applied with the sales price of the dollar. If you require a digital or printed purchase certificate, please request it through the address: mercadeo@fonafifo.go.cr  propuestas@fonafifo.go.cr  indicating, you must attach proof of purchase and indicate the reason for the compensation.

4. Through the Costa Rican Integrated Public Procurement System (SICOP):

This procedure is executed through Public Bidding processes

Fonafifo works for a green development with social well-being

The money raised is applied in the Payment for Environmental Services Program (PES), in protection or recovery of forest cover. This Program is important in the reversal of the deforestation process, the conservation of biodiversity, the protection of water resources, the mitigation and adaptation to climate change. The Costa Rica PES Program has received several international awards.

By Forest Law 7575, Fonafifo is authorized to establish alliances with companies and public institutions, national or foreign.

Fonafifo is a secure platform for your financial contributions. We are a public institution that carries out accountability, traceability of its processes and audits of its finances.

Interested organizations can contribute money for the Payment for Environmental Services (PES) and development of specific projects as good social and/or environmental practices. In accordance with regulations, financier safeguards can be complied with and/or environmental or social impacts of activities can be compensated.

The Alliances are very adaptable, they offer the opportunity to pay a differentiated owners or holders of properties of PES, based on socioeconomic conditions, age, gender, or according to the strategic importance of the environmental service provided by the property.

Fonafifo has signed more than 100 agreements. For occasional or frequent travelers, Clean Flight allows you, your company, your family and your customers to pay compensation for your greenhouse gas emissions on any flight route.

Price of the compensation unit: US $ 7.5

The Directorate of Development and Commercialization of Environmental Services is responsible for measurable, verifiable and reportable projects that support the compensation. The money is applied in Payment for Environmental Services, through a Program that favors Costa Rica.

In accordance with article 14 and 19 of the Decree No. 32868-MINAET, public and private organizations that contribute with the fee rate, can sign an Agreement with Fonafifo to define the area where they wish to apply their financial resources through the Payment for Environmental Services (PES).

For due recognition by the MINAE Water Directorate, the public institution or private company must present the Fonafifo certification indicated in the Decree, during the month of June of each year, and the amount transferred to Fonafifo will be applicable for the next period.

This type of agreement allows the Organization / Company to select the basin of interest, define the type of PES (for protection or recovery of forest cover), receive application reports of the resources, and much more.

Living Forest Costa Rica is a registered brand that integrates innovative projects of Payment for Environmental Services (PES). These projects benefit property owners or holders who contribute to the conservation of biodiversity.

There are three special PES projects, one in the OSA peninsula, another in Monteverde, and other in Guanacaste (Dry Forest). Descriptive documents are attached.

The Certificate of donation to Living Forest does not generate payment of interest or principal, and does not provide any right over the property where PES is been paid. According to Law No. 7092, article 8, subsection q, properly verified donations that have been delivered, during the respective tax period to the State, are deductible from gross income.

• Reports will be delivered with information on the farms under PES and in areas where trap camera is carried out, images of the fauna present will be shared.

In line with the right to an eco-friendly and healthy environment, every project manager must be in charge of taking preventive and offsetting measures.

The Payment for Environmental Services (PES) is recognized by funding institutions and National Environmental Technical Secretariat (SETENA) as good environmental practice (Article 3, point 20 of Executive Decree No. 31849-MINAE-MOPT-MAG-MEIC).

You can get your goals through FONAFIFO's PES by selecting properties on specific life zones and habitat of species of interest for your program or project.
